Why hand out Emmys once a year when you can hand them out twice? The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired Sunday on ABC, were technically this year's second Emmy Awards, since the 2023 ceremony was delayed until January due to last year's writers and actors strikes. But Sunday's awards ceremony, hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, celebrated a new set of honorees (mostly).

FX's Shōgun, which had already won 14 trophies at last week's Creative Arts Emmys — setting a record for the most Emmys ever won by a show in a single season — extended its record to 18 Emmys on Sunday night, with wins for Best Drama Series, Best Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Sawai), Best Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Directing for a Drama Series (Frederick E.O. Toye). Sawai and Sanada also became the first Japanese actors to win the top acting prizes.

Netflix's Baby Reindeer dominated the limited series categories; in addition to winning Best Limited or Anthology Series, creator and star Richard Gadd took home trophies for performing and writing, and supporting actress Jessica Gunning won as well.

The comedy awards brought the night's biggest surprise: Max's Hacks beat out FX's The Bear for Best Comedy Series. Hacks had already landed a couple of major trophies earlier in the evening — star Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky won Best Writing. But The Bear won most of the comedy acting categories (with Emmys for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas), and creator Christopher Storer was honored for directing, setting up a showdown between the stressful kitchen dramedy and the show about comedy writing. At the end of the night, Hacks took the prize.

The night's other big stories include Jodie Foster winning her first Emmy for her lead performance in HBO's True Detective: Night Country, Lamorne Morris winning his first Emmy for his supporting performance in FX's Fargo, and Elizabeth Debicki winning her first Emmy for her supporting performance in Netflix's The Crown.
