Let's hear how things happened from Edward's point of view
The Twilight Saga made a humongous amount of money when the five films were released in theaters from 2008 to 2012, but there have been no further adaptations since. That's about to change, however, as Lionsgate TV and Netflix are partnering up for an animated series based on Midnight Sun, which is a re-telling of the original Twilight book written from Edward's point of view instead of Bella's.
Since concluding the four books of the Twilight Saga, author Stephanie Meyer hasn't written any further sequels or prequels — instead, pivoting sideways with Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, a gender-swapped version of the story, and Midnight Sun. And now, Twilight's return to the screen will involve an adaptation of the latter book.
News of this project first popped up in early 2023, but all that was known then was that Lionsgate was planning a Twilight TV series. We then learned in early 2024 that it would be an animated series — only now, with the official announcement, do we know that Midnight Sun will be the focus.
More on Netflix:
We have no information about the timeline for Twilight: Midnight Sun, but it's safe to assume it won't come out in 2024.
Twilight is a romantic melodrama about a love triangle between a vampire named Edward, a werewolf named Jacob, and a high school girl named Bella. Edward's vampire clan doesn't feed on people, and sometimes they have to fight the ones who do, and also the vampires don't get along with the werewolves. The original books are written in first person from Bella's perspective — Midnight Sun swaps the POV to Edward.
Midnight Sun doesn't quite live up to its billing, if we're being honest, because it's largely just all the same scenes from Twilight, now with Edward's narration instead of Bella's. There's a little bit of new lore, but it's not really filling in the gaps the way you would want something like this to do. We're not gaining enough new or interesting insight to justify our time spent with it or Meyer's time spent writing it.
But there's a lot of potential in making an animated series based on Midnight Sun. Twilight isn't really a story that requires much of a budget to do in live action, because the entire series takes place in a small town or in the woods. The original movies were all mid-budget affairs until the stars' contracts had to be renegotiated in order to split the last movie in half. But an adaptation of Midnight Sun that meaningfully expands upon Edward's century-long life? That would probably cost a lot more. Having an animated series allows for a lot more freedom to explore without ballooning the budget.
No cast members have been announced yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out who our new Bella, Edward, and Jacob are.
Netflix says that Sinead Daly is writing and executive producing. Daly — who has served as a writer on The Getdown, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Tell Me Lies, and Raised by Wolves — is the only creative mentioned in the announcement aside from Meyer, so Midnight Sun is still in the early stages.
It's gonna be a while before Midnight Sun lands on Netflix, so it wouldn't be that weird for the announcement to inspire you to revisit the Twilight Saga. Strangely enough, they aren't available with any streaming subscription, but they are available for rent from any digital retailer that allows you to purchase a film, like Amazon Prime Video.
