Season 3 is actually happening
Euphoria, HBO's high school series, is on an extra long break. We finally know when the show's third season, long delayed by last year's Hollywood strikes, scheduling conflicts among the cast, and what sounds like a lot of behind the scenes drama, will begin filming with all principal cast members returning. We have no idea when we can actually expect to see new episodes, but at least this is a start.
In the meantime, we'll be here debating whether this f---ing play is about us and updating this post as more information gets released.
Almost three years since the premiere of its second season and a whole lot of drama later, HBO finally confirmed that Euphoria will begin production on Season 3 in January 2025, with all principal cast members returning, per Variety.
"I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on Euphoria in January," said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of HBO drama series and films. "We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam [Levinson] and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans."
With Euphoria set to begin production in early 2025, you should plan to get comfortable waiting. Optimistically, we hope that HBO is able to stay true to the previously announced 2025 release date, but it's entirely possible the drama won't return until 2026.
Season 3's planned 2025 release date was first announced by HBO CEO Casey Bloys in November 2023, when Euphoria was included in a "Coming in 2025" sizzle reel shown at a press event, alongside The Last of Us Season 2 and The White Lotus Season 3.
Details on Season 3 are scarce, but in August, creator Sam Levinson told Elle that he's conceiving of the third season as a "film noir." Levinson added that the season will use Rue to "explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world."
HBO confirmed to Variety that the principal cast — excluding Barbie Ferreira, who announced her exit from the series in 2022 — will return for Season 3. Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow, Colman Domingo, Eric Dane, and Storm Reid are all set to reprise their roles.
Reports of behind-the-scenes drama plagued Euphoria during Season 2, much of it centering on a rumored feud between creator Sam Levinson and star Barbie Ferreira. In August 2022, Ferreira announced via Instagram that she won't be reprising her role as Kat in the show's third season, writing, "After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I'm having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye. I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez."
In April, Ferreira addressed her exit from the series on the "Armchair Expert" podcast. She called the move a "mutual decision," saying, "I don't think there was a place for [Kat] to go." Ferreira added, "I don't know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that. I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don't want to play that, and I think they didn't want that either." She also denied rumors that she had walked off set during the second season.
Series regular Angus Cloud, who played Fez on the first two seasons, passed away on July 31, 2023.
Euphoria Seasons 1 and 2 are now available to stream on Max.
