New Max and HBO Shows and Movies in August 2024

Maybe House of the Dragon kept you busy enough, but if you're still looking to fill the Succession-sized hole in your heart with an HBO drama that's a little more grounded in reality, you should give Industry a try. The finance drama has returned for its third season, with two HBO alums — Game of Thrones' Kit Harington and Barry's Sarah Goldberg — joining the cast. 

Other than that, August was a big month for docuseries on Max, like the true crime series Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? and Chimp Crazy, which follows the wild story of the bond between a woman and a chimpanzee. And if you missed them in the theaters — and judging by the disappointing box office numbers, you did — Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga made its streaming debut in the middle of the month, Kevin Costner's Western passion project Horizon: An America Saga - Chapter 1 premiered a week later, and Ishana Night Shyamalan's horror film The Watchers is watchable starting Aug. 30.

The best new HBO and Max movies and shows in August

Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on Max make it to HBO. We'll designate Max exclusives where appropriate.

Industry Season 3 (August 11, HBO)

After two simmering seasons, Industry has quietly established itself as one of the best and most underrated shows on TV. Returning for its third season in a shiny new Sunday night time slot, it might just be time for the finance drama to get a well-deserved boost in viewership. The series picks up after that explosive finale which saw Harper (Myha'la) eager to get back into the finance world after her unceremonious firing by Eric (Ken Leung), her boss/mentor/father figure. Back at Pierpoint, Eric, Yasmin (Marisa Abela), and Robert (Harry Lawtey) are figuring out whether Lumi, a new green tech company led by Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harington), will help or hurt their careers. [Trailer]

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (August 16, Max)

Ignore the headlines about it being a box-office bomb — the $67 million haul in North America was way below what Warner Bros. had hoped for — Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a fun ride. A prequel to the modern action classic Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa follows a young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she ascends to Imperator in an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dudes straight out of a GWAR concert riding in monster trucks. Chimp Crazy (August 18, HBO)

This four-part docuseries from Eric Goode, the creator of Tiger King, follows Tonia Haddix, the self-proclaimed "Dolly Parton of chimps," who spends her days caring for animals in captivity, and her bond with a chimpanzee in particular spins into a cat-and-mouse game with authorities and an animal rights group. It's interspersed with tragic stories about chimps held in captivity, while Haddix's own case happens in real time, making this an animal rights thriller with The Jinx-like reveals. [Trailer]
